Web design can provide a great service to a client. The process of constructing a website can be a great exercise in conceptually, visually, and thematically organizing a pursuit. Some good examples of choices to be made are: what is important enough to be on the first page; should we group the contact and about sections together; or what social media tools to include. Perhaps most important is how elements of the site impart a desired experience. Might we accomplish this by telling a story and generating an emotional response all-the-while crafting a user experience designed to deliver information.

Choose the right tool for the job. Mobile might be the most powerful web design tool; but may present the most challenges due to bandwidth constraints and user interface gauntlets like touch screens. With mobile we must manage expectations and even understand hidden goals of the user. The goal of a mobile site may be to provide efficient access to contact information taking advantage of a smart phone's gps or email access – or to show off a portfolio during an elevator pitch. This is not a newsletter, it is not a microsite; a rich email is attention grabbing and contains a directed set of information designed to convert readers to visit content on a website. Modern email clients have many of the features of web browsers. Therefore we can use CSS styles to organize text into columns, include large images, and grid out sophisticated layouts.

A successful website is a function of information architecture (the primary purpose of a website is information) and visual design. The two must be effectively balanced IOT meet specified goals. A site can tell a story through video, images, and text. Each of these disciplines have a remarkable learning curve and a web designer is smart to understand much of these disciplines, but the real talent is an ability to translate these demands into a project and the overall gestalt of the experience.

This section is included because of the growing importance of motion graphics on the web. The language of film carries over to the web. Some exciting examples of this are cinematic interfaces, transitions and cuts, layering sound, or manipulating a galaxy of blinking dots.
